Pink Saturday - July 24 - Antique fair finds

For something different this time around, I show you some pink items found today at a local Antique Fair.
The first stand I came to had a piece of "Mum's Pattern" - Hocking Glass Company - Mayfair. You can see the small pink dessert bowl here (second bowl from the left). I was tempted to pick it up, as today would have been Mum's 80th birthday, but as I already have 12 of these bowls, decided to leave it to another collector. The little pink bowl to the very left, I believe to be Australian Crown Crystal. You can just see the difference between Australian Pink and American Pink glass. The American Pink Depression Glass is more a watermelon pink, where the Aussie Pink has a slight peachy tone. (Don't you just love the blue comport with a pink tassel? The green jar is also cute, but I have to now be very particular what I purchase. If I gave in to everything that was pretty, my house would be bulging at the seams!)
I also love the epergne found at the next table, certainly way out of my price range, but isn't it pretty? I would be having caniptions every time somebody walked past the table it was on, or if the cat would ever jump onto the cabinet it was set on. On one of the next stalls, I found this small selection of Clarice Cliff -
I am not sure what the pattern is called, possibly Delicia Fruit? Please let me know if I'm right or wrong!
My mother in law has a big fruit bowl in this pattern - she used to throw her car keys into it (shudder) I like the little trio (shhh I may have found her Christmas present! hehe!)

Pink Saturday - a large PINK fish

I was all set up and had my post ready to go and lost it somewhere in the ether...so here I go..a belated PINK SATURDAY (on Sunday!)

Generally described as an Art Deco Float bowl, this piece is described as produced anywhere from the 1930's all the way to the mid 50's. I feel too that it is a later, rather than earlier production. The frosted fish is in perfect condition, sitting in a frog - that is what the middle piece is called (why? who knows?) and the two pieces themselves rest in a low flared bowl which has a slightly raised section to safely fit the frog and fish. The idea would be to fill the bowl with water, and arrange your flowers and foliage to 'float' and of course, some flowerstalks could be arranged to fit in the holes in the frog to stand up. I would expect these to have been more frothy foliage, to give the effect that the fish was leaping from a pond.
It is common to see these in pink, but I have also seen a blue and amber version.
Of course, I prefer the pink. (Although a blue fish leaping through the foliage could be spectacular!)

This particular item IS for sale. Look around on the infoweb if you like - from time to time, one appears on ebay.

Pink Saturday - Royal Lace

Pink Saturday - Old Colony Teacup and Comport

Hello Again - another Pink Saturday rolls around.

This week, my Pink Glass selection is the pattern called 'Old Colony'.

Made by Hocking Glass company from 1935-38 it also is known as 'Lace Edge' or 'Open Lace'. A delicate shade of pink, but is so easily chipped by the flat edge being pushed against other glassware or walls.
The comport shown here on its edge is the first piece of Old Colony that I purchased and the first piece of pink glass that I bought for 'me' - not bought to be passed to my Mum. Chipped and all, I still like this piece and at christmas time, will fill my glassware with small sparkly christmas ornaments.
The teacup and saucer is very nice, but I'm never sure about drinking hot drinks in clear glass...I'd be worried about the glass shattering.
Of course, down the track, Hocking Glass Company joined with Anchor Glass and became Anchor Hocking who are famous for their 'Fire-King' range. (another collecting obsession of mine - but we'll deal with that another day!)
The saucer also serves as a base plate for the comport - many Hocking glassware items had dual purposes - just a clever design idea in the Depression years - make every item serviceable.
This pattern was relatively plentiful here in Australia. I wonder if the Australian Crown Crystal company purchased the molds from Hocking, as they appear to have done with another pattern Iris & Herringbone. This pattern however, is only found in sweet watermelon pink.

Pink Saturday - Sowerby Hermes or Mercury Vase and apprentice piece

This week, I have two items to show off in the one photo.
The piece to the front I am led to believe is an apprentice piece. After the plate is taken from the mold, while still warm, or after being gently heated, the four sides are folded up and a rod of glass is applied. A clever apprentice could produce many of these in uniform size and shape. The better the skill, the better the angle and neatness. I think that this plate is an Australian Crown Crystal plate, as the pattern is fairly generic - and I see a lot of this pattern as plain plates/saucers. I don't pick up the apprentice pieces unless they are pink nowadays.
The second piece of glass, is a pink version of a green one that I fell in love with about 15 years ago. I scrimped and saved to purchase the Sowerby Uranium Green Hermes/Mercury Vase when I had no other item of green glass. About 6 years ago, I aquired the pink version which matches so much more of my glass. I see green ones all around, but not pink ones. There is a flower frog inside the vase that sits and allows the flower stems to be arranged 'just so'. (Please pardon the dust on my shelves)

Pink Saturday - Mayfair Sandwich Platter

Here I am ready for Pink Saturday - this time an artsy pic of the handle for the Mayfair Sandwich Platter - yes..ok.. it's the same pattern as last week, but I seem to have so much of it to show off. this would look so lovely at a tea party full of cucumber sandwiches. Why do I have to live in a house of men who don't appreciate pink and dainty????

Time for me to join Beverly and her Pink Saturday - that should give me inspiration to feature one of my pieces of pink glass each Saturday - and get this poor little pink blog moving along.

Today I share with you my latest piece of Pink Glass.

Mayfair Pattern - made by Hocking Glass Company 1931-37. Often referred to as 'Open Rose'
Large underplate/bowl.

I have had a couple of the flared bowls for a number of years, but have only seen one of these prior to this month's ebay win. It arrived from NSW, extremely well packaged and for now takes pride of place on my display table.

This is how the two pieces combine to make a lovely setting for flowers or for a spectacular food display.

I'll do my best to find another pink piece next Saturday. Do come along and see......
